Make a Grammeme™
Using Memes to Teach Writing Clarity and Grammar!
What is this meme an example of in writing that could be strengthened?
Oops! A healthy diet of intentional comma use when writing can make a feast for your readers. :)
A CWR1A student describes in his Reflection Essay how making Grammemes™ and doing grammar exercises helped strengthen his writing:
I learned that relying on grammar correction software to find minor grammatical weaknesses, as I did throughout high school, is not sufficient. Software cannot detect writing weaknesses such as comma splices, passive voice, and awkwardly phrased sentences within my essay, so these went unaddressed. Noticing common writing weaknesses among students, my professor takes a rather humorous approach of teaching us to recognize these: meme writing workshops. Students take meme templates from the internet and add captions written deliberately with a weakness. We present the meme to the rest of the class to have a laugh and learn from the meme as a counterexample of what not to do in an essay. Our professor also provides a PDF containing many grammar jokes to serve as a tool for students to check their understanding. Students either get the joke or they don’t; if they do not get the joke, it is an indication that they need to study and practice on their own time. These engaging grammar workshops along with other resources taught me to spot and revise writing weaknesses, making me a better writer.
Your challenge: Why are these memes funny?
