On day 1, and regularly after, I ask students to private-chat, everyone-chat, or email me artists and/or songs they like. I play these before class, during class breaks, before conferences, and at other times, and the music has helped me connect with students and contributes to classroom joy. I also asked a former student / musician for ideas, included below with suggestions from current students. Studies show how important music is to Gen Z students for inspiration and for meaning (USA Today 2020, Forbes 2018); in fact, a majority turn to audio to cope with stress and anxiety (RollingStone 2020).
I play these through the Advanced Zoom setting for “Share Screen” then “Advanced” then “Music or Computer Sound Only.”
