Exercises for Writers
You can make a stronger argument if your sentence sense is sinewy. Plus, if you know how to shape the rhythm of a sentence, your reader will follow your argument anywhere. At Cal your essays are not docked ten points per comma splice or twenty points per subject-verb disagreement. I don't have a "Mistakes" Mindset, and we don't use unhelpful words like mistakes, errors, and incorrect. Instead, your essays are evaluated holistically. Unfortunately, a pattern of grammatically weak sentences, imprecise diction, and/or wordiness makes a writer's argument lose strength. Use these exercises to build up your writing style's muscle. Here the exercises are listed in the order of magnitude that a pattern of such weakness makes it hard for the outside reader to understand the essay. If you wish to Make a Grammeme™ to add to these pages, let me know!
