CWR4B Research Activities
1. This activity is simple, and powerful. Find the free version of You Are Here given in the links above. Actively read it using the SQ3R method. Look at chapter headings, any images, and also the digital framework for the book. A. Write a paragraph on what you learn. When was You Are Here published and by whom? Describe what you observe in the "Survey" part of this SQ3R activity. It can also include new terms you spot as you survey the text. B. Add to this paragraph next by writing down three questions you have about what you found when you surveyed the book. C. Be prepared to give quotes and page or location numbers as you share your paragraph of observations and your three questions with classmates. D. Where do the two authors work? What do they do? What else have they published? Can you find a review of You Are Here? If so, where is it and by whom, and what arguments does it make about the quality of this scholarship?
2. Look up Limor Shifman. A. Find a review of her book Memes in Digital Culture, and summarize it in three sentences, also giving the source information and date. What arguments does it make about the quality of this scholarship? B. Next, find out what Shifman's latest publications are. These may include articles, books, planned books, videos, conferences, social media activity, and/or any other work you can find. Write down citation information for each source as well as a link for each. C. Be prepared to share with the class what you discover. That should include how you see Shifman's research trajectory changing and/or staying the same. As one example: Is she still interested in memes? D. From your research, what do you think is Shifman's greatest contribution to digital literacy studies?
