Cal Students' Experiences in CW11
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and appreciate the course you've put together. When I first joined this course, I honestly didn't know what to expect for the framework (besides public speaking, of course), but the exercises here in class, although they have pushed me a little bit out of my comfort zone, have also helped me challenge myself. And I know challenges are good a lot of the time! Therefore, I just wanted to say thank you for all of your dedication and effort toward the course. Greatly appreciate it.
This is one of the most inspiring experiences I have ever had as a student at UC Berkeley. I used to have a speech stutter and really struggled with public speaking and large group discussions. After having taken this class on Public Speaking, my confidence has blossomed while giving a public speech and being interviewed for jobs; it really encouraged me to push outside of my comfort zone through inspiring teaching and a supportive network.
Both COLWRIT public speaking courses I took with Carmen, CW10A and CW11, have had an immense impact on and significantly improved my public speaking skills.
Why take CW11 Berkeley Changemaker: Public Speaking?
The point of this Changemaker CW11 course is to give you practice in the process of preparing speeches and also in speaking before an audience. Emphasizing the Berkeley Changemaker pillars of critical thinking, communication, and community, this variable 1-unit or 2-unit practicum is designed to help you refine your academic speaking skills. Students learn the techniques and the process of effective public speaking. You practice your skills, build a respectful and kind online community, practice self-compassion, and develop confidence in oral communication, empowering you to effect positive change.
Delivery method: CW11 happens asynchronously, so we don't have scheduled class meetings. Instead, you engage online with the clear and engaging course materials that are friendly, diverse, inclusive, practical, and rich with welcoming and instructive videos and audios, instructional handouts, explanations of best practices, student speech examples, practical exercises, and more. Also, you can go largely at your own pace, as long as you keep up with due dates that are spread out at a gentle rhythm to keep you engaged, thriving, and learning.
The course is also supported by amazing GSRs (Graduate Student Readers) who contribute invaluably to the CW11 community!
