Thanks for being at Engaging Gen Z! I'm Carmen Acevedo Butcher (she/her). To hear how to pronounce "Acevedo," please visit my LinkedIn, where there is a recording of it: www.linkedin.com/in/carmen-acevedo-butcher-ph-d. I'm a transnational fusion of Cuban and American. My immigrant grandfather left Cuba and bravely started over in the United States, selling shoes. His determination, or ganas, was passed on to me.
I have taught composition for twenty years. I am also an author, a poet, and a translator of Early Modern French, German, Latin, Middle English, and Old English. My publications include ten books and many articles; you can learn about these by visiting my author website. My MA and Ph.D. were done at the University of Georgia, Phi Beta Kappa. I began teaching and researching at UGA, with kind mentors in composition pedagogy and scholarship. I taught previously at a liberal arts college in Georgia, receiving the Carnegie Professor of the Year award for Excellence in Teaching. I was also a Fulbright Senior Lecturer at Sogang University in Seoul, teaching undergraduates and graduate students. A 120-hour graduate-level TESOL certificate from Kennesaw State University provides a valuable pedagogical background for teaching Multilingual Student Writers.
At UC Berkeley I currently teach as a full-time lecturer in the College Writing Programs. My resume is here.
